The rocky promontory is named after Tsar Peter I, who is said to have climbed it on November 11, 1712, and carved his initials into a wooden cross. From the viewpoint you can enjoy a panorama of almost the entire spa district.

A little lower you will find what is likely the oldest lookout structure in the area, the wooden pavilion known as Mayer’s Gloriet, which was built in 1804 by Karlovy Vary native and wealthy merchant Mayer on a rocky outcrop near Jelení Skok directly above the spa center of the town.

Goethe's Lookout

Lookout tower with a ghost trail for children

The observation tower is located on a hill opposite the Diana Tower. It is 32 meters tall and designed in the style of Nordic brick Neo-Gothic architecture.

The idea for its construction came from Belgian Princess Stephanie, who was captivated by the view—just as the famous writer Goethe had been several decades earlier, after whom the viewpoint is named.

This lesser-known lookout is a peaceful spot with magnificent views of Karlovy Vary and the surrounding area. Around the tower you’ll also find a newly created, roughly three-kilometer-long “Haunted Trail.”

Three Crosses Lookout & Camera obscura

Two views in one shot

An ideal spot to watch the sunset over the city. From the Tři kříže (Three Crosses) lookout pavilion you can admire Karlovy Vary from the eastern side. The viewpoint is named after the three large wooden crosses erected here in the 17th century as a symbol of the city’s re-Catholicization after the Battle of White Mountain.

On the platform of the former Rudolfova Height below the Three Crosses once stood the excursion restaurant and café “U Tří křížů.” In its garden was the original wooden Camera Obscura pavilion, where light images of the landscape were projected onto the walls of the darkened interior.

The current pavilion was built in 1997 after the original was destroyed during a strong windstorm.

Lookout of Charles IV

The Oldest Stone Lookout Tower in Karlovy Vary

The pseudo-Gothic brick observation tower in the shape of a minaret with two viewing galleries was a popular lookout spot at the end of the 19th century. The tower originally bore the name Emperor Franz Joseph’s Viewpoint and was opened to visitors during the 1877 spa season.

The tower also served as a pavilion and immediately after its opening attracted great interest from spa guests. Fireworks were launched from the tower’s first gallery during various celebrations.
